Sadly, the statistics are correct. However, drowning can be prevented. Here are some proactive measures you may take as a parent to protect your child from drowning.
Be a CPR Certified
Many of us new parents take a CPR lesson while pregnant or shortly after the birth of our first child. However, many of us neglect to renew our certifications. However, I tell you that it is a priority. Put it on your list of tasks immediately. Your knowledge of CPR could save someone's life until paramedics arrive.
Invest in a Pool Fence
Most kids 4 and under drown in home pools. Invest in a pool fence with a lock and self-latching gate to keep children away when you're distracted. Fences prevent childhood drowning quite effectively. Fences should be 4 feet high with a lock and latch 54 inches off the ground. When no one is watching, a toddler can crawl out a doggie door. Accidents happen quickly with children.
Put Alarms in Doors and in the Pool
Do you have a sliding glass door that opens to the garden or pool? Install sliding glass door locks that only an adult can open. I also recommend installing window locks and an alarm system that whistles or rings when a window or door is opened. You'll be notified if your child escapes to the backyard or outside. Swimming pool alarms may detect waves on the water's surface and ring when someone falls in.
Supervise Closely
A responsible adult should supervise children in or around water (including bathtubs). A specific adult can supervise each child with water. Drowning happens swiftly and quietly, so adults should avoid distractions like reading, using the phone, and drinking or using drugs. 1,6 Lock water doors after swim time. Learn about potential dangers before visiting a new place.
Know the risks of natural waters
There are hidden dangers in lakes, rivers, and oceans, such as dangerous currents or waves, rocks or plants, and low visibility. 8 Check the weather report before doing anything on, near, or in the water. The weather can change quickly and cause dangerous flash floods, strong winds, and thunderstorms with lightning strikes.
I hope you found these tips helpful.
